During this time of limited movie watching options, here are a few suggestions:
WHAT’S ON FILM & VIDEO:
• Through August 26, 2020, UNLADYLIKE2020 will be releasing 26 short films profiling diverse and little-known American women from the turn of the 20th century. Their latest release features Sissieretta Jones, a trailblazing opera star who spent much of her time in Rhode Island around 1876. Learn more and watch the 10 minute video here. Research and production of this short were supported by grants from the Rhode Island Council for the Humanities.
• Assorted Videos from South County Filmmakers on Amazon Prime including Through The Red Door.
• The Criterion Channel streaming service recently released several timely films for free, including classics of Black cinema like Julie Dash's Daughters in the Dust, Cheryl Dunye's The Watermelon Woman, and Oscar Micheaux's 1925 silent Body and Soul, as well as Agnes Varda's Black Panthers documentary, the only film directed by Maya Angelou.
• RUSTIC Drive In: Rhode Island's only Tri-View Drive-In Movie Theatre.
Route 146 S. in North Smithfield, RI.
Opened in 1951 as the Rustic Drive-In with a single screen. In 1988, two more screens were added. Hence, Rustic Tri-View Drive-In with a capacity for 550 cars.
This outdoor theater is listed as the last-standing drive-in and showcases double features April thru September. Check for the latest show listings.
• newportFILM Virtual. Documentaries will be viewable online for free or to rent a week before a hosted Facebook Live event. Check their website regularly to see what’s currently available.
Once you RSVP you have 7 days to watch the film after you start the viewing process on the external link which will be emailed to you.

WHAT ELSE IS HAPPENING:
• Paramount Television canceled “Cops,” the once-popular reality show that ran for 33 seasons and that civil rights groups criticized for its portrayal of African-Americans.
• HBO pulled “Gone With the Wind” from its new streaming service, but pledged to bring back the 1939 film that romanticizes the Civil War-era South “with a discussion of its historical context.”
